Low fat smoothies can play other roles besides being a healthy snack or cool drink – a good smoothie can help you build lean muscle, increase energy levels, and boost your immune system to help fight off bacteria and viruses. Anyone following the news has heard the hype about the “Swine Flu” (which ironically has nothing to do with pigs). People across the country are buying up N95 face masks, sanitizers, and disinfectants to try to avoid the flu. What they don’t realize is that the most important way to avoid getting the Swine Flu is to have a healthy immune system.

This low fat smoothie recipe is one I drink a lot of whenever I start to feel a cold or flu symptoms coming on, and it helps me to stay healthy throughout the year. It’s packed with citrus and vitamin C, including a supplement that can also be used by itself.

Ingredients:

Frozen peaches

1/2 Banana (eat the other half)

Fresh orange slices

Orange juice

Emergen-C (orange flavor)

2 tbsp non-fat yogurt (optional)

Put equal parts orange slices and peaches in the cup along with the banana, filling it roughly 3/4 of the way. Pour in one pack of Emergen-C, yogurt if desired, and the orange juice. Blend until smooth. This delicious low fat smoothie will help keep your immune system boosted so you can avoid sick days. If you are already sick, increase the yogurt (and make a it frozen) for a treat that feels great on your throat. Enjoy!

Of all the low fat smoothie recipes I have come across, the 3 most commonly used ingredients are bananas, orange juice, and strawberries. If you have recently started working out and are experiencing muscle cramps, this combination will help you reduce those thanks to the high levels of potassium. It also makes a great flavor combination and is ideal for covering the taste of supplements (some protein powders don’t blend well and have a bad after taste – more on that later).

You will need:

1 whole banana (yep, the WHOLE banana)

Frozen strawberries

Orange juice

Fresh oranges (optional, but a great way to boost vitamin C and to keep that immune system strong)

Non-fat yogurt (preferably frozen)

Protein powder (optional – if you use protein powder just use half the banana… and eat the other half!)

This delicious low fat smoothie has a very smooth texture thanks to the banana and the yogurt. It’s also another great smoothie to start the day with or to have after an early morning workout. Enjoy!

This low fat smoothie recipe takes the traditional banana and orange recipe to a new level by combining multiple delicious fruits for a taste sensation that starts your day right. Quick, easy, and nutritious – this is the recipe I typically make for breakfast after a brief morning workout.

You will need:

Frozen pineapple chunks

1/2 Banana, peeled (eat the other half – it’s good for you!)

Orange juice

Frozen sliced peaches

2-3 Frozen strawberries (optional)

1 Tbsp Protein Powder (optional, but recommended)

Fill the smoothie blender cup about half way with a mixture of pineapple and peaches. Add the 1/2 banana and protein powder and optional strawberries. I usually do not use the strawberries, because they are an overpowering flavor as I mentioned before, but every once in a while they make a nice change of pace for this low fat smoothie recipe. Pour the orange juice to about an inch from the top, keeping in mind that the protein powder will expand when blended. Blend until smooth and enjoy.

Low fat smoothies make a great breakfast when you are in a hurry, especially this peach, banana, and orange recipe. I typically add an additional tablespoon of protein powder on mornings when I workout to help with muscle recovery. You’ll notice that I did not use any yogurt in this recipe. This low fat smoothie still gets that delicious smooth texture when blended because of the banana that was added. If you like the smoothie even more milkshake-like, add a tablespoon of non-fat vanilla yogurt.

The Honeydew Smoothie is the ideal choice for a day like today. Since the temperature hit triple digits here in Arizona, I figured this is the ideal time to introduce my favorite low fat smoothie recipe . This smoothie combines light and sweet honeydew melon, sweet and tangy pineapple, and tart cherry limeade. It is refreshing and sweet, but does not need added sugar.

You will need:

20 oz individual smoothie blender or standard blender

Frozen pineapple chunks (available in the frozen section of any grocery store)

Frozen honeydew melon chunks (you’ll need to cut your own honeydew and store in a freezer bag)

Cherry limeade (available premade or from concentrate)

Protein powder (optional)

Non-fat vanilla yogurt (optional)

Depending on the size blender you use (in my case, a 20 ounce personal), begin by filling with honeydew and pineapple about 3/4 of the way full – leave a little more room if you intend to add protein powder. I typically use a 2 honeydew chunks to 1 pineapple chunk ratio. Add the optional 1 tablespoon of protein powder or 2 tablespoons of yogurt to the smoothie, then fill to the top of the fruit chunks with cherry limeade. Blend this mixture until smooth. Because I do not use any ice, this should blend rather quickly, but still stay ice cold with that smoothie texture.

Smoothie Recipe Variations: The basic smoothie should turn out like a slushie. The addition of yogurt or protein powder will give it a smoother, milkshake-like texture. Keep in mind that protein powder (especially whey protein) expands when blended, so you need to use a little less of each of the other smoothie ingredients. You can also add any other supplements you like, such as creatine, fat metabolizer, or immunity. The tartness of the pineapple and the sweetness of the honeydew melon in this low fat smoothie helps to mask the taste of supplements. You can also add a strawberry to the mix, but I typically avoid adding strawberries as they can be an overpowering flavor in most smoothies. A similiar smoothie to this one has a short life on the menu of a national smoothie chain with lemonade instead of cherry limeade.

The Honeydew smoothie is a great treat for hot days and an easy way for you to enhance your diet with supplements. Enjoy!

Welcome to the LowFatSmoothieRecipes.com, your source for delicious, nutritious, and easy to make low fat smoothie recipes. I’ll share with you the most delicious, nutritious, and UNIQUE smoothie recipes I have developed over the years.

You’ll notice all smoothie recipes have one ingredient in common: a good blender. My recipes are designed for a personal size blender because that is normally what I use, unless I am making them for more than 1 person (in which case you can just double the recipe). My personal blender of choice right now is the Magic Bullet. You may have seen it on an informercial hosted by a British guy with a thick accent. It’s powerful, has a number of attachments and different sized cups (I use the 20 ounce), and (for the past two years anyways) holds up really well.
For something a little simpler, and a lot more cost effective, check out the Shake N Take Smoothie Maker. The Shake N Take blender doubles as a 16 ounce bottle with flip top, so you can blend your smoothie and then take it with you. Ideal for the early morning rush, the Shake N Take is simple to use and surprisingly easy to clean. You can find the Shake N Take for less than 20 bucks at http://www.ActiveForever.com.

Regardless of the blender you use, the smoothies I have come up with are very easy to blend. The key is eliminating the need for ice by using frozen fruit, whether it be pre-packed or fruit you have frozen yourself. When ice melts it becomes water… who wants a watered down smoothie?
